Van Hove-Uytterhoeven A strong basis that breeds top performers in several generations

07 Feb 2023

Putte: Hok Van Hove-Uytterhoeven is one of those Belgian colonies that apparently never know a lesser season. It really is a feast for the eyes to analyse the performances of the last decades. Victories at all levels...you just don't get used to it at the Van Hove-Uytterhoeven home.

Since 2019, 92 pure wins were achieved on 4 years (2019-2020-2021-2022)...an average of 23 per year. There were 2 National, 6 Provincial and 6 National Zone wins.

Citing the old basis

The basis on which the Van Hove-Uytterhoeven colony was founded is a story in itself! During the Second World War, the occupier forbade the keeping of pigeons and those who did not want to slaughter their pigeons could house them in aviaries in Anderlecht and Schaarbeek, for a hefty fee of course.Evrard Havenith, then one of Antwerp's glories, feared that after the war years there would not be much left of his so famous and feared racing team. He took the safe bet and diverted a full round of eggs (60) to Jos Uytterhoeven. If things went wrong he could still fall back on his old strain after the war. But Havenith got his pigeons back after the war and the Havenith pigeons stayed in Putte. For Jos Uytterhoeven a blessing because this solid base brought him success but also later they formed ninety per cent of the foundation of the Van Hove-Uytterhoeven loft.In a loft, built from old beer crates, sat the "Oude Flippe" (a pure "Havenith") the ancestor of the loft. As a young pigeon, he was a crack and, together with the "Kennedy "won the car from Etampes in 1972. He then moved to the Van Hove-Uytterhoeven loft where he was soon pinned on the status of top breeder. In 1973 Gust and Mit Vanhove, a stone's throw from Uncle Jos, built a new home and also pigeon lofts. The new lofts were built with the profit made on the old loft. Therefore, they started with pigeons on their own account with great enthusiasm and because the colony consisted largely of pigeons from Jos Uytterhoeven, the name Uytterhoeven was kept in the tandem name. The "Oude Flippe" stood at the cradle of the young colony Van Hove-Uytterhoeven, his son the "Late Flippe" was the better breeder. "Oude Bange" x "Pareltje" formed a real top couple in the first years ! Very carefully some foreign blood was added, "Hofkens I" and "Hofkens II" both from Karel Schellens and some pigeons from Flor Engels en Zonen, Putte (breeding together with the 5 best breeders and hens). The golden line was continued with the super breeding pair "Golden Boy" x "Annabel" and both on fathers' and mothers' side the pedigree goes back to the "Oude Flippe" ! They formed the backbone of a colony that would reap world success and claim a place among the national and international elite !

It is not given to all champions to stay at the top. The art of supporting a solid breeding base and possibly reinforcing it with new blood is so archly difficult after all. But Geert Vanhove, who of course learned the trade from his parents, apparently has the "fingerspitzengefühl" to maintain the so successful breeding lines and even more... to reinforce them with new breeding phenomena. Geert sits up a little straighter in his chair as he begins his story: "Our big aim is to discover "the super breeder", but of course that is easier said than done. We do line-breeding and the big bloodlines through our colony are the "Flippelijn", the line of "Golden Boy", line of "Bange II" and "Young Zanzibar". These bloodlines are crossed among themselves and 20% are crossed with foreign input. Over the years, we found that crosses with "foreign blood" usually work very well here. We have been successful with pigeons from Vandenabeele ("Bliksem line"), Kris Cleirbaut ("Lady Delores line") and Vervloesem ("Pataya" and "Bangkok line") "Golden Boy" x "Annabel" is a super breeding pair, but "Golden Boy" paired with another hen has also been bingo several times ! Discovering a good breeding pair is obviously a good thing but discovering a super breeder who gives good offspring with several hens is a six on the Lotto ! Such a super breeder we have found in the "Bangkok" line.

The superior "BANGKOK" (B11-6263281)

If Geert has to designate a certain cock as the "leader" of his breeding loft, he does not hesitate for a second and indicates "Bangkok" (original Vervloesem). The Bangkok line was very successfully crossed with the line "Golden Boy" 94-753, from the old base! An important contribution to the construction of the strain was also made by Gaby Vandenabeele ("son Bliksem"), Gaston Van de Wouwer ("Young Kaasboer"), Van Leest - Peeters ("Charles-line") and last but not least Roger Keynen ("Miss Sjarapova").

Here is a brief overview of what this unique breeder has already kicked up in the world. What is particularly striking is that we can cite several generations where the breeding value of "Bangkok" is so decisive.
