Hok Van Den Bruel ( Itegem ) 1st National Ace Pigeon longer middle distance youngsters KBDB 2022

28 Feb 2023

For the loft Van Den Bruel colony from Itegem in Antwerp, the 2022 season could not go wrong after winning the national victory from Argenton. Their 2nd pigeon on that particular Argenton was superstar “Morris” who became 1st National Ace pigeon longer middle distance youngsters KBDB later in the season and was also the best youngster over 4 national races. A great stunt, a nice double and the lowest coefficient over 4 national races since this ranking was created when 4 national races were organised.

The season was therefore over for Kurt & Nancy, pigeon sport at its best, which they experience here together with son Robin, who will now also start with pigeons at his own home. We can only applaud that and hope that they will shine again here.

The pigeon sport was not so nice for Kurt a few years ago, he wanted to say goodbye to the pigeon sport in 2020. He played in tandem with Bart Hendrickx under the name Hendrickx – Van Den Bruel until 2019 and had seen it all a bit. But that was without Jelle Roziers who took them completely under his wing. He is now a friend of the house and assists them with all his knowledge, several pigeons came here in recent years and now they also breed together. A nice story over several years that has already yielded some fantastic results so far.

Also with yearlings in 2022

In the 2022 season, yearlings were also raced, 34 in total, all of which raced in classic widowhood. These pigeons have not been coupled and had to get to know their partner during the first races of the season. In the beginning this time was very short, but from the national races they were allowed to stay together until the next morning. The entire group flew several national races in order to separate the wheat from the chaff.

It will be handled differently in 2023. The hens are coupled at the beginning of February and will raise a youngster. Around February 20th they come back outside to resume training when the cocks are on the nests. After the youngsters are 15 days old, the hen goes off to prevent them all from laying a second time. The condition is fine at the moment because the pigeons like to train very much. During the season the hens are in an aviary during the day and in the evening they go to the resting loft. When they are basketed they do not see any partners, but when they return home they are allowed to stay together for some time.

The widowers have had nothing to do with coupling during the winter period and will only see their hens during the first races. The plan here is to let them come into shape later with regard to the hens and that they only get their partners for a few hours the day after they return home.

The daily training sessions will continue until mid-April, after which they will be increased to strengthen the condition until they are in the middle distance.

System young pigeons

The youngsters are weaned and the 1st and 2nd round are separate, when both groups fly well, the sexes are separated so that no pairs are formed. The young pigeons do not have boxes, but only perches on which they can sit. They are darkened from the beginning of March until the longest day and illuminated from about 8 to 10 days after the darkening has stopped. We will keep this up until the end of the season and then they can moult.

We had to learn for the training thanks to Jelle, they were trained 20 to 25 times up to Vilvoorde before they flew their first time Quievrain. Learned young…. We think confidence is important for the youngsters and they have to stay awake so that they don't get on the wrong track. Here they flew 4x Quievrain in quick succession with midweek flights added and then 2x Noyon, 2x Melun and then Bourges. After Bourges they flew Noyon and again very hot. We then drove up to 50 km during the weekend so that we were home for all the pigeons that were on their way. This was followed by 3 more national races in 4 weeks, but they managed them very well. Between 2 national races you have to see how the pigeons are and give them a rest now and then. That is why there was no driving between the 2 flights from Argenton. The youngsters are taken away a lot, so the training at home is less than elsewhere. We keep this at 1x a day and this is always in the morning.

The pigeons train once a day and this is always in the morning, before the season they train hard but now we are already happy when the cocks fly for half an hour and the hens for an hour by the end of the week.

The youngsters therefore do not form pairs for the season and are not really raced with the sliding door. We separate the pigeons very quickly after the flight, we don't like all the chaos in the lofts and prefer to let the pigeons recover rather than have them behave like crazy. In a sprint race they stay together for 15 to 30 minutes, in a national race this is about an hour and a half, but then they don't have the desire to mate. They also do not see each other before basketing.

Accompaniment

The feeding schedule here is completely devoted to the Aidi mixtures, especially flying mix 1-2-3 is used here together with the advice of Jelle. When they return home they always get Vliegmix 3 and at the beginning of the week we use Vliegmix 1 on Sunday and Monday, Vliegmix 2 for 1 or a day and a half and then Vliegmix 3 until basketing (usually the last 4 feedings). The youngsters now receive Aidi Kweek for a long time after weaning. We also fully use Aidi in terms of products (Condition Booster, Health Elixir, Pro Bacterial, Omega Plus Oil and Recup Fast). They always get clean water on the day of basketing.

For tricho we prefer to use the yellow drops rather than work with medicines. That is why 4 or 5 feeding times before training are given yellow drops over the food and throughout the season with 1 night in the basket they get this again 1x per week, with 2 nights in the basket we switch to one drop per week in the nose.

In terms of vaccinations, we normally only did paramyxo and smallpox, but the schedule will be adjusted in 2023 and they will first get paramyxo rota, then paramyxo and then smallpox.
