De Neve Marnick Wizard with the hens

24 Jan 2023

Aalter: When Marnick does something, it has to be right.  He was fascinated by animals and everything around them from a very young age and that has not changed since. He is fascinated by the "game of pigeons", but above all he is obsessed with good care and passionate about his “darlings”.  His installation is relatively limited in size but is well thought out and efficient in maintenance.
Marnick is also a winner, he wants to be at the top of the results and he realises like no other that good care and discipline combined with class pigeons is the only way to success.  What he has produced in the past few years has already made many mouths water. Also the season 2021 was very successful with as highlight 3rd National ace KBDB small middle distance with "B21-4111142".

A boost from the Vandenabeele breed

In 1995 it really started. With 2 black cocks bought at Gerard Desseyn (Aalter) Marnick was very successful. These pigeons left their mark on the colony for many years. At that time Marnick was assisted by Julien Mijnsberge, a local short distance racer. Julien was the fixed helper of the colony and taught Marnick the basics of pigeon racing. In 1997 the colony was reinforced with pigeons from Cyriel Bonami (Landegem) & Antoine Timmerman (Knesselare). It was a very successful cross.
Until 1997 they only raced on speed distance with youngsters. Gradually they switched to middle- and very heavy middle- long distance with Limoges and Tulle as end station. Real investments were not made immediately. Marnick specifically went looking for a kind of pigeons that can be used for the hens. This is how he ended up with a local and old school friend, Rik Cools.
A second important pillar that caused the change was the contribution of De Saer pigeons. Because Marnick is very successful with pigeons from both colonies that are largely based on Vandenabeele pigeons, he decided to buy pigeons himself from Gaby Vandenabeele.
Marnick doesn't hide it, since the introduction of the direct Gaby Vandenabeele pigeons, his results have received an enormous boost. The care is one thing, the quality of the pigeons is the other important thing to succeed in today's pigeon sport.
Next to the original Vandenabeele pigeons Marnick also succeeds with direct toppers of the earlier mentioned Rik Cools and Rudi De Saer but also with direct pigeons of Joël Verschoot and Anhony Maes. About 90% of Marnick's colony now consists of these pigeons. They are smart pigeons, go-getters and winners. Something we are all looking for as fanciers.
