Bart Geerinckx ( Wommelgem ) 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance old birds KBDB 2022

27 Mar 2023

We drive to Wommelgem in Antwerp where we end up at the top colony of Bart Geerinckx. A name that has been at the top of the pigeon sport for decades and that will once again add a national ace pigeon title to its palmares in 2022. For the first time, the national competition for long distance yearlings was raced over 3 races, which made the degree of difficulty a lot higher. Bart's best hen "Twinkle Star" was not only the best over 3 races but also over 4 races.

During the visit he explains everything about the system, nutrition, recovery and admits that the pigeon sport has all evolved over the years. Competitions used to be open much longer. Everything is going faster now, it's all about recovering as quickly as possible and thinking about what's to come. You are a kind of manager who tries to make as few mistakes as possible.

Racing team completely on classic widowhood

Both the cocks and hens race on classic widowhood. The new season starts here in mid-January. Then the training sessions are resumed and all racing pigeons are in the aviary day and night. You can already use the word resistance here and from January 15 until the coupling date, basic condition is the other word that is number 1. They fly easily for an hour and a half a day for 6 weeks without any effort and thus maintain their basic condition.

The widowers are coupled between 1 and 5 March and raise a youngster themselves at the start of the season. The hens of the widowers are taken away after the youngsters are about 10 days old. The hens are coupled 14 days later and are prepared for the season in the same way. Once all pigeons have laid, they go back outside so that they quickly get back into the rhythm.

The training sessions are increased to 2x a day in May so that they are at the top against Bourges and Limoges. They then fly for one hour twice a day without difficulty.

During the racing season, the hens also house in the aviaries during the day, only when there is a strong wind, and at night they enter the sleeping loft. The widowers are inside the loft during the season and are just half full.

The pigeons usually fly a long distance race every 14 days from the end of May, while they do this almost weekly at the end of the season. They are illuminated for a month from July (5:00 am – 11:00 pm) until the end of the season. I don't want to make a mistake in June because a pigeon goes back into the basket too quickly, here you can crack them and the season is over.

Motivation is an easy thing here, the pigeons never get their partners before the flight. The pigeons do not enter widowhood until May and can still easily fly for 3 months. If I notice that the motivation is going away, I will release them on Wednesday at 30 km and let them together for 2 hours, but never on the day of basketing. When they return home, they can always stay with their partners, but they always separate in the evening to promote recovery.

Bart mainly strives for a pigeon that has a very strong basic condition and that will fly in itself in April with additional daily training sessions in May so that they are then completely ready for several tough races in a row. In modern pigeon sport, thanks to all the guidance and science we have, much more is possible than before. There is always a response to feeling and especially how the pigeons recover from the efforts made. I no longer draw up schedules in the winter because with one flight in the season that does not go as planned, all schedules fall into the water. I prefer to follow the vision of nutrition and recovery so that I can decide on my gut which flights will follow.

Young pigeons
The youngsters are not a priority for Bart, but he hopes for natural selection and a few who get sick in the group will not get their chance for long. He only uses natural products and no antibiotics. They are darkened from March to June, but no extra lighting is done. The pigeons of the 1st and 2nd round only come together after the 2nd round has flown from Noyon, which is usually around the end of July. We like to give the pigeons several times on shorter distances so that they learn a lot, even on Wednesdays with good weather they fly Quievrain here to gain experience. Most pigeons race 2 or 3x middle distance and / or 1 national race.

In the spring when the racing pigeons are coupled, the young pigeons get more freedom because the old ones do not train that period. This way they learn a lot from the environment and they go up more easily. From weaning until May, the young pigeons are simply given Aidi Kweek, a light breeding mixture with which they can train well and do not get fat. From Bourges in 2022 he had 2 youngsters with him, but he will start with 36th national against 23,000 youngsters.

Accompaniment

I give full confidence to the Aidi mixtures here. The intention is always that the pigeon has recovered well the morning after the flight, otherwise you don't have to work with it the following week. For recovery I mainly use Recup Fast and Protein Boost from Aidi. As an extra, I can sometimes smoke an extra protein pill K+K Rohnfried after returning home.

Health Elixir in particular is about eating at the beginning of the week and I try not to follow a set schedule every week. I prefer to give a product a few days in a row to get some kind of boost. In the spring the racing pigeons get a block from Atemfrei with Avymycine Forte, then usually follows a block from Avidress with Usne Gano from Rohnfried.

Bart himself is not in favor of medication and antibiotics. He also never goes blind.

The pigeons are given yellow drops over the feed for tricho in March 2 days in a row and during the season a yellow drop in each nostril once a week on the day after returning home.

After the season, the racing pigeons are no longer coupled and they go back into the aviary and receive moulting mixture until the end of the moult (+- the end of December). From January until the coupling the pigeons are fed 1x a day with Aidi Rest (give enough) and from the moment they have youngsters again receive this mixture for 3 days to remove all waste products from the body. Afterwards he switches to Aidi's feeding schedules and it is Vliegmix 1-2-3 and Girl Power (from 350km). Only the pigeons for the long distance get a separate pot with Long Distance towards basketing because the pigeons from all races are mixed up in the lofts and are fed together. As extras I give peanuts and walnuts towards basketing. From the start of the season until the last day, the racing pigeons are fed here twice a day.
