In the past season of 2025, no fewer than 25 pure first prizes were won, without any duplicates. This included three provincial victories: Issoudun, Toury, and Quievrain.

The icing on the cake was a 4th place National Ace Pigeon Sprint 2025 and a 6th place Best Loft in the Netherlands Unassigned 2025.

After much deliberation and a good conversation with a fellow fancier, Danny decided to auction off his top birds older than 2024. This gives the Herbots family an exclusive and unique insight into his exceptional loft stock.

In addition to pigeon racing, Danny has a very busy working day. He starts early in the morning with caring for and training his pigeons, after which he works from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. This forces him to work very efficiently and stick to a fixed system. At the end of December, all pigeons are paired. The eggs from the breeders go under the racers, but he always breeds two youngsters from his best racing pigeons so that he can quickly assess their breeding value. After the breeding season, the racing pigeons are darkened from early March to mid-April, and sometimes a little longer for the hens.

The pigeons train once a day. Due to his work, Danny does not have time to motivate them extra on the day of basketing by showing them their partner. That is why he trains his pigeons weekly, usually on Wednesdays, but sometimes on Tuesdays or Thursdays in case of bad weather. The distances range from 30 to 50 kilometers. After release, the pigeons are immediately separated again to keep their motivation high.

The loft is designed to require little maintenance while providing an optimal climate. The floor is covered with bean straw, which ensures a dry and clean environment. Under the straw is underfloor heating, which is mainly used in the spring to prevent moisture problems. 

Danny also uses infrared heating. During the flying season, it is set to 15 degrees and later, depending on the outside temperature, to around 12.5 degrees. Large windows at the front ensure a constant supply of fresh air. The ceiling is completely open, without any sliding panels, which keeps oxygen circulation optimal and humidity at around 60 percent. For Danny, this is a crucial factor in delivering top performance.

Danny also keeps things simple when it comes to feeding. He gets up early to take care of his pigeons and train them if necessary, so everything has to be done before 10 a.m. Feeding takes place in the afternoon or early evening. He mainly uses Beyers mixtures, such as Recup, Galaxy Light, and Galaxy Energy. The Recup mixture is given after the breeding season to bring the pigeons back up to weight. The young birds also get this mixture, which helps them start training vigorously. Once the season has started, the pigeons are given almost no Recup.

During the racing season, they are given Galaxy Light and Galaxy Energy when they return home, supplemented with candy seeds, peanuts, and Willem de Bruijn's morning mixture. Nutrition plays an important role on basketing days. The pigeons are then given Matador's Boardingmix for extra energy. For the sprint races, Danny mainly feeds Galaxy Light and Boardingmix in the afternoon. For flights with two nights in the basket, the pigeons are usually given Galaxy Light from Wednesday morning. On Thursday morning, they are given Galaxy Light again and in the afternoon plenty of Matador's Boardingmix. For longer distances, extra high-fat seeds and peanuts are provided. Over the years, Danny has eliminated many by-products and now relies on only a few regular supplements, such as LTW from Beute on Monday and Tuesday and Pigeon Balance from Beute for extra conditioning.

In terms of medical care, Danny opts for a sober approach. He works together with Belgica De Weerd in Breda. Before the season, the pigeons receive a trich treatment and a treatment for the respiratory tract. During the season, they receive a yellow pill every four to six weeks. The young pigeons are vaccinated against paramyxovirus/rotavirus and later also against paramyxovirus/herpes. In addition, he treats them against pox and carries out an annual preventive paratyphoid treatment, alternating the products to prevent resistance.

The young bird loft measures 3.5 by 2.5 meters and is filled until the end of March or beginning of April. As soon as the youngsters start to pull away well, Danny starts training them. He first releases them mainly in a westerly direction to avoid obstacles such as high-voltage cables. Later, they are taken to Philippine to get them used to crossing water. Some groups do this without any problems, others need hours, but that is also part of their training.

Because his work makes racing impossible for the time being, Danny races his young birds from the nest. As soon as the restaurant is sold, he wants to switch to the ‘racing from the door’ system. For now, however, he is very satisfied with racing from the nest. He knows from experience that pigeons on eggs often perform best.New love, long brooding, or even overbrooding are his favorite nesting positions. Once the season has started, the young pigeons are no longer lapped, except very occasionally on Wednesdays together with the old pigeons.

Breeding stock

Over the years, Danny acquired pigeons from various lofts, but never before had he experienced such resounding success as with the pigeons from Stefaan Lambrechts. They gave his colony an enormous boost. Both in pure form and in crossbreeding with his lines from Paul d'Hondt and Willem de Bruijn, they proved to be exceptionally strong performers.

The acquisitions from Antoon v/d Burg (Willem de Bruijn type) also yielded several excellent breeders. In addition, Danny managed to obtain a particularly strong flyer from Stef Bals, with Stef.
