Eddy Claes from Kortenaken shines with 1st Prov Vierzon 1,044 youngsters and 1st Prov Vierzon 1,989 yearlings

23 Aug 2023

A few weeks ago, this colony shone with 1st Provincial Vierzon against 1,989 yearlings, that was with a lesbian yearling hen on eggs. Now a few weeks later it's hit again, this time with a young cock that won 1st Provincial Vierzon against 1,044 youngsters and came home in the pouring rain. They actually hadn't expected it yet because the pigeons from Lorris had to come home first, at a certain moment 4 pigeons revolved around the loft and “Rain Man” flew to his loft, but they made him fly away because they thought he was on a wrong cage. Then he dove a 2nd time to his trapboard and they let him in anyway. Vierzon came on the clock and everyone was equally surprised. There were no reports anywhere at the front and this pigeon indeed flies far ahead, but due to the difficult circumstances on the road and at home, that is of course always possible. For Eddy Claes, his brother Freddy and loyal helper Walter Devos their 2nd provincial victory in a few weeks time and they also won the 2nd Provincial against 456 old birds in the same race from Vierzon on Saturday.

Racing team system

The racing team is coupled in the winter period, but it is ensured that the hens do not lay a second time. Afterwards there will be no 2nd coupling anymore, but they can simply start their daily training sessions.

There are some difficulties in the system that are beyond your control. Mutual pairing is one of them, we have problems with that this year, but we just let them do it and give them a saucer and let them defend a corner in the loft. So this was the case on Agen where they deliver a top performance nationally (35th National against 5,851 old birds) and now also on Vierzon with “Bo”. They were basketed on a youngster of 12 days old.

When the lesbian hens take over the floor, the other hens are simply locked up in the counter cupboard so that they remain calm. The hens don't come to the aviary much during the season. The pigeons always train once a day in the morning and are usually taken away again on Wednesday when we drive the youngsters. We do this with all our racing pigeons. Now that the hens are all together, they race 2 to 3 times a week because training at home is not really an option and it is the end of the season anyway.

As motivation for basketing we have some differences, the pigeons that go into the basket on Thursday get nothing and are just picked up like that. The pigeons for the sprint had the same system in the first half of the season, but when we noticed that the swing was a bit out, we showed something at the basketing on Friday to motivate them again. When they return home there is no timer on staying together, in the beginning this will never be until evening, but we certainly leave the pigeons together for a long time.

Young pigeons

Because we have a loft without sliding doors, the youngsters are here all season long. They were darkened until June 21 and then immediately illuminated until the end of the season. We are no longer annoyed by this, we just let them build nests and play them like this until the end of the season. When they really start to make litters (July and August) we try to drive to Gembloux twice a week so that they can make some kilometers. They also train once a day, but not when the pigeons are driven.

Accompaniment

In terms of nutrition, we use the Beyers mixtures. We mainly use Sport Galaxy Light on the shorter flights, but once they fly the middle distance or further, we will switch to a heavier schedule because the pigeons have had to deal with a lot of head wind and heavy flights this year. That is why we use Premium Widowhood and Energy Mix for the last 3 to 4 feedings as an extra. We use the same system with the youngsters, this may be too heavy for the pigeons for the speed, but that's the way it is. The widowers are fed separately in their living box, so here we can play a bit with the weight of the food for the sprint pigeons, but in the other lofts everything is simply mixed.

For the medical story we always visit Wouter Kumpen in Kortenaken for our vaccinations and for check-ups during the season we visit Simon Cans from Neornivet.

This year the pigeons received a cure with Soludox and one cure with Suanovil for the airways. For tricho we put ¼ flagyl on both old and young ones at the beginning of the season and then we use the yellow drops. With the old we do this separately through the nose, with the young pigeons it goes 1x a week in the drinking water.

As a last extra we use the by-products of Gert Jan Beute and we use the conditioning powder of Raymond Ectors in the 2nd half of the racing season.

Congratulations to the entire team with these great victories from the entire HERBOTS TEAM.
