DARKENED LESBIAN HENS ON NEST

“Small but super fine” … this is how we could describe the colony of Van Horenbeeck perfectly. With only 10 widow cocks, 17 racing hens and about 50 youngster, the season of 2017 was started off.

Due to lack of space, the racings hens are on the loft together with the youngsters and it doesn’t take very long for the hens to pair up with each other. Leo leaves them be and if they come onto eggs, they are being raced onto nest position. Leo explains :’I keep an eye on these hens and on the other loft I always have some couples together. So when necessary, I can place some youngsters of these couples with the lesbian hens so the hens aren’t only raced on breeding position but also on youngsters.

This system works perfectly except for my national winner ‘Kaat’. For one or another reason she didn’t pair up with another hen, but she had her eye on a young cock and the coincidence is that I’ve split up my young hens and cocks just a fortnight before. So ‘Kaat’ was without a partner all of a sudden! Maybe this was her motivation for her victory. Who will know. ’

Another remarkable fact is that the hens are being darkened the entire day. Reason…parallel the loft there’s a street and the street lights makes that it is never dark on the lofts. That’s why Leo darkens, from the first until the last race, all racing pigeons from 19h until 7h.

In a medical way, Leo takes the advice of vets Stijn Rans and Raf Herbots. Leo is very pleased with the products of the HERBOVET range. Both at arrival as at departure the suiting products are being given.

The bases of the Van Horenbeeck colony, leans on the pigeons of: Jean Vandessel (Wijgmaal), Van Avondt Danny & Nick (Wespelaar), Cammaerts Willy (Wilsele), Vos Jennes (Diest) and Eylette Michel (Diest).
