L Stabel and Son, Goirle: Superb racers for more than 35 years

23 Feb 2024

The father (Louis) and son (Eugene) combination is able to be constantly at the top in club and the combines, and also National they have very good results. They take part in all the races organised bij semi-national organisation Brabant 2000 and had on all distances good results but they are on their best on races from 100-650 km.
In 1985 the first success came with 3rd prize from Dax against 13,308 pigeons, this hen had previously won 16th National Bergerac, 15,069 pigeons and 7th National St. Vincent, 19,344 pigeons. A year later Louis won 1st National Orleans District 1 against 6,275 pigeons. In each of the following years the results stayed very well.
In 1990 Louis became National champion youngsters and in 1992 Eugene won for the 2nd time National Orleans. The years later they won a.o.: 3rd youngster National competition WHZB, 7th,11th ,19th and 22th National champion, 2nd over-all ZNB, 2nd middle distance pigeon National for Europacup etc. etc. And in Brabant 2000 a lot of championships and 17 TELETEXT pigeons (semi) National till 2007.
Louis and Eugene are racers old style who race from March till September and try to compete every week. This bring them in 2023 for the 32th year in a row the over-all championship in their club with an average from ca. 45 racing lofts with many big names in pigeonsport. To be constant in the top for many year you must have a very strong base who bred well in many generations and Louis and Eugene have a very strong base of pigeons which cross very well with new lines.
They race very strong during the whole season!!!! That is very UNIQUE!!!!

The fanciers
On the results we see Louis Stabel and son Eugene, but in fact it is actually a trio because ‘better half’ mother and wife Annet also contributes to their success.
Louis is 72 years old and his son Eugene 44. Both were infected with the pigeon-bacillus on a young age and never came to recover from it. Louis was earning his living as a construction worker, but due to back problems he is now working as a caretaker on a elementary school. Louis started breeding pigeons at the age of 18 after being seriously injured during a traffic accident. As a boy he had visited his uncle at weekends to watch the birds return from races. Already in his first year he had a good start and was 20th in the St. Vincent National and also 20th from Dax. After the marriage Louis and Annet moved from Alphen to Goirle. The first years Louis had to work long hours in order to support his young family and didn’t have much time for the pigeons. In 1983 this changed and Louis began serious racing. Then, in 1985, the first success came when he won 3rd prize from Dax against 13,308 birds with a hen he had from H. Verhoeven. This hen had previously won 16th National Bergerac, 15,069 birds and 7th National St. Vincent, 19,344 birds. A year later Louis won 1st National Orleans District 1 against 6,275 birds. In each of the following years the results stayed very well.
From childhood Eugene became to be interested in pigeons because he often joined his father  watching the arrivals of these pigeons. He got his own loft at the age of 10. In 1990-92 he won the junior championship in Midden Brabant. And in the competition arranged by the magazine “De Vredesduif” he won the first championship 1990-92. During this period he also won several championships, but was expelled from competition because of a club rule that junior members could not compete in the championships. For example in 1992 he would have won the 3rd overall championship as a junior! In the same year he won 1st National Orleans in Region 1c. At the end of 1992 Louis and Eugene decided to race together. The partnership proved to be very successful: since that year they where every year in the top in their club, combine’s, Brabant 2000 and also National.

The building of their loft
In an historical perspective there have always been many great champions in Goirle and neighbouring villages. So Louis didn’t have to go far to obtain quality pigeons: in his own neighbourhood he got pigeons from Jan Verhoeven & son, Harry Verhoeven, Verhagen van Gorp and Christ vd Pol. In addition to these pigeons he purchased some birds from Ad Sas, who lived 5 miles from Goirle in Poppel, Belgium. Ad Sas had the right kind of racing birds in this loft from the world famous Louis van Loon, Poppel. Louis Stabel bought 28 youngsters from Ad Sas and one of them became a superbreeder. Descendants of this hen have won 5 National-races.
With pigeons from the above fanciers Louis and Eugene have been building a strong breeding fundament. Later on the they crossed their own base with pigeons from many local fanciers, so it is impossible to mention them al. Every year they buy some pigeons, but never named pigeons only from good racers and than from their best racers/lines. Every purchased pigeon will be tested in the races first. When they prove to be good racers they are crossed with their own pigeons. Occasionally they transfer new pigeons direct to the breeding loft.
Also the build is important. Louis and Eugene like pear-shaped pigeons with eyes with a good radiation. This is all a matter of intuition and therefore cannot be explicitly described. It is also important that the pigeons are always in a good shape and look very nice. Louis is asked frequently to judge other fanciers pigeons, he will always be honest and explicit about this opinion and thoughts. About their success there are very clear: there are no secrets, you must put a lot effort in your colony and think logical. Never do things impulsive!

The colony
Louis and Eugene are real programme-racers, and they take part in every program race from 100-1000 km. In their area that means 14 short/middle distance races, 5 long distance races, 5 marathon races, 10 youngster races, 5 late tour races. To be able to take part in all races they have 20 couple of breeders, 29 widowhood cocks and their hens, 80-85 widowhood hens with 32 cocks and a 9 couples for the marathon. They don’t race with the hens from the widowers. Also with the cocks from the widowhood hens they don’t race. They breed 200 youngsters. For each discipline there is a separate loft.
Breeding season starts around the 26th of November by pairing the breeders and around 15 January they pair all their racing pigeons including the overnight pigeons. From the breeders they place the 2nd round of eggs under their racers, so they have in a short time 3 rounds of their breeders. The breeders bring up the 1st and 3rd round youngsters themselves. When the youngsters from the racers are 18 days old they place the youngsters in their bowl on the floor and the cocks feed the youngsters. The hens go into a run till they go to the widowhood lofts.
