Bert Martens & Son from Elsloo (NL) win 1st Charleville against 3,856 pigeons

24 Apr 2024

The first official competition of 2024 for all departments in the Netherlands was on the agenda last weekend. They had announced bad weather forecasts, but luckily everything turned out well. In department 4, Charleville was on the calendar for the Bert & Roger Martens colony from Elsloo. They start this season with a victory and this with a super young pigeon from last season that immediately shows its class again this year.

The cock is again a descendant of the fantastic breeding line of “Mathieu” on which they are further building their colony at the Martens house. These are pigeons that can be present on all flights up to 600 km and you absolutely need that in the Netherlands as the kilometers increase.

With old and yearlings only with cocks

Here at Bert & Roger the hens are only raced as young pigeons and the cocks get their chance as old birds and yearlings. The widowers were coupled at the beginning of December and simply practiced winter breeding. Afterwards widowhood started for them and they came back outside. In the beginning this was once a day and from May we will increase to twice a day because the mornings are warmer.

Not a lot of time was spent training the cocks. In 4 times it went to 25km and then twice a training flight of 85km. At basketing the hen is shown for 5 to 10 minutes. When they return home, they are always allowed to stay together for a few hours.
