Van den Abbeel - Van Paesschen from Lebbeke - 1 Nat Ace Bird KBDB Great Middle Distance Youngsters 2019

29 Nov 2019

The national races young birds, since year and day the favourite game of a lot of lofts in Belgium. Who has a look at the past 3 years, there is one loft that is way ahead the others. The tandem Van Den Abbeel – Van Paesschen won the past 3 years in a row the title of 1st National Ace bird over 4 national races and got closer and closer in the official rankings of the KBDB. This is how they won in 2017 the 6th and 15th National Ace bird, in 2018 they were 2nd and in 2019 it was a hit in the rose and won gold. Their latest top pigeon 4050583/2019 “Remco” didn’t disappoint on the last race and raced himself in the books of history. And on top of that they were told that same day that they also won again the best young pigeon over 4 national races with 4050486/2019 “Eden”. The delirium was close after such an amazing stunt 3 years in a row, I suppose we have to wait for quite a long time before this record will be beaten. Yes, Patrick & Ilse have their youngsters on a roll and this since the restart end of 2015, this was the new beginning after that they could taste during two years of the national races with the youngsters when they still raced in tandem.

So in fact, 2014 – 2015 was a test what it would do with them, delivering a fight against the entire country had become their ‘thing’. The bitter pill of having no pigeons at all any more had become our luck. There was an online auction that winter of 2015 from Gevaert – Lannoo, we bought 3 pigeons in this auction which became real super breeders ! As the sexe of the pigeons didn’t match their pedigrees we called them and got to that these pigeons weren’t sold by themselves, but the big advantage here was that the first step direction communication was made and that this strain became the red wire throughout our colony.

Aside that I was very good with a cock from Guy Van Holder, this was a pigeon from Peter Trost and is already grandfather of 2 National Ace birds ( Greg & Eden ). In Winter 2018 I also got a hen from W-J Jacobs & Zoon and crossed her with a Gevaert – Lannoo. They became parents to “Remco” 1 Nat Ace bird GMD youngsters KBDB 2019 and the year before from super star “Jolien” who earned her spot on the breeding loft after the racing season of 2019.

Also pigeons from Raf Herbots come on our loft on a yearly base to race here and they do it very well on the middle distance races ! The longer races depend on “2060441/2017” who became father to “Sagan Ace” 4050495/2019 and “Renske” 4050496/2019 who both raced middle distance and greater middle distance with success and are both present in our auction !

There is a pinch of short distance blood on the breeding loft from our old strain and we notice now that they also can take on easily the national races and a few more pigeons from Willy Francois, Domien Van Hoeck, Geert Van Roy, Niels Broeckx, Bart Van Impe and Kris De Bisschop.

System young birds

Yearly they ween about 120 to 140 youngsters to race with, not all of the same age as weening can take on for 2 months (until end of March). They are being fed twice a day with 10gr per pigeon in the morning and all they want in the evening during half an hour. After 2 weeks they come out for the first time and have free choice until their schedule starts.

This means out at 11 in the morning until about 14h and at 15h the last once are being called in to get food, at 16h they get darkened and can’t go into the aviaries anymore. When the darkening ends they can choose day and night between loft and aviaries (also during enlightening as there are also lights in the aviaries). As there are many pigeons on the loft during darkening that aren’t that big we make use of a ventilation that can be adjusted and takes out the bad air every hour. Training isn’t very hard over here, the pigeons are out for about 3 hours but race in groups and never for long periods.

From end of March/ beginning of April 5 more year birds come in who can race together with youngsters the races. That period we also start the darkening from 16h00 until late in the evening when it is dark and they can wake in the morning at broad day light. This regimes is on until the 1st week of July. From then on 2 weeks of adjustment to normal day hours follow and mid of July we start to enlighten them until the end of the season (this the entire day from 5h30 until 22h30). To quote the words of Patrick, I can keep the top form for 8 weeks when all’s in my favour and then it’s over !

At the same time of enlightening the sexes are being separated and are being released in the morning. From then on they train separately and the 2nd group is only being released when the 1st group is in so they don’t see each other during the week. From then on they are on the sliding door system and come together 4 hours before basketing (from 9h to 13h on the day of basketing), at the beginning they have no extra motivation, only the last 2 race we make use of nest dishes and some boxes but nothing more ! We noticed the past 3 years that our best pigeon isn’t coupled anymore and come home for their spot in the loft or aviary.

They can stay together at arrival until the day after until about 13h to 14h so the late comes also get something as a reward.

Give us a bit more explanation about training?

We start training our youngsters at a distance of 1km so they see their loft when they are up in the air. We do this to gain their trust and go further in baby steps, we built up with 3 , 5 , 7 , 2x10 , 2x15 , 2x20 and 1 or 2x 35 km. Then they race 2x Quievrain and Noyon before they’ll do 3x middle distance and the nationals come.

They have to race each week unless the weather is very bad, at the day of arrival and basketing they don’t train and once they are at 350 to 400km it isn’t necessary anymore to train each day. We try to toss them on Tuesdays and Wednesday from Ninove (20km) to give them the trust again. When the weather is bad we only do 1 extra toss. So once the train is running they don’t train much at home anymore.

It is looking for a combination of making efforts with relaxation at home or short tosses and give them enough rest when the races were hard.

Guidance

The pigeons don’t get anything else as the Beyers Galaxy mixtures. After weening they get during 14 days breeding mixtures and afterwards we switch on to Moult Galaxy until they go to Noyon (somewhere end of June). Only when they don’t want to race in Spring we give a lighter mixture and it’ll be 50% Moult Galaxy and 50% Vandenabeele. When they go direction middle distance it will be Galaxy Sport Light until the day of basketing, from then on it is 100% Sport Energy ! When they have the national race they get this last mixtures the last 2 days with as extra some peanuts and will be fed for the last time at 17h00.

The pigeons that race middle distance when the other group will be basketed already on Thursday get on Friday only a light mixture as they got full with the others already.

In a matter of guidance he follows the advice of Raf Herbots and this last one is being visited every 3 weeks during the season. In a matter of vaccination I do a lot, at weening I have them vaccinated against paramyxo, 14 days later paramyxo / herpes and another 14 days later paramyxo / small pocks. A full month later another vaccination against paratyphoid so by the end of April they had all their vaccines. I try to keep the pigeons on natures rhythm until the end of May / beginning of June. Then all the pigeons are being purified and this year they got a 5 day cure at the end of May on the 1st of July during 3 something against the airways.

At day of arrival and the day after they get Recovery together with Amino acid and Herbosol. The pigeons are being dropped each with the eye drops from Raf Herbots and the Yellow drop in the beak.

As extra supplements I only make use of the HERBOVET GAMMA. They get 2x a week Aqua Control, 2x Herb test, 3 to 4x elderberry sirup with brewers’ yeast over the food and 2x Pigeon Elite. Two days before basketing I also give Herbosol.
