Jo & Florian HENDRIKS (Nijswiller – NL) Specializing in one-day long distance races in the Netherlands

The performances of this father and son tandem from Nijswiller (not far from Maastricht in the Dutch Province of Limburg) every year are simply outstanding. It is remarkable that the condition is maintained up to and including the last race of the season ... and even more ... they often strike hard the last flight. In 2017, this was the case for the international flight from Narbonne where they scored 4th, 26th and 27th place against 8,480 yearlings on a distance of 881 km with only 5 yearlings in competition. They noted these three yearlings arriving at 6:28, 6:54 and 6:55 pm. Phenomenal! Performing this well in the last race of the season takes pigeons with a very strong perseverance and cocks that have not lost any of their strengths even after a tough season.
In 2018, they were super strong in the final flight from La Souterraine, a provincial flight, as well. This flight was exceptionally released on Friday, under tough conditions (tropical temperatures). La Souterraine represents a distance of 605 km for Nijswiller. Only 2 pigeons clocked above the 1,000 meter mark - so super heavy - both belonging to the father and son tandem. Their first pigeon was clocked at 5:14:22 pm, the second at 5:14:26 pm - the third at 5:24:40 pm, a top score against 1,094 pigeons - with places 1, 2, 3 and 13 pigeons competing. Their first two pigeons had a lead of as many as 10 minutes on a loft mate! The results speak for themselves ... 2018 was another great year on the one-day long distance races.
Their "Kleine Gerard" has grown into the stock cock, having won 4 x 1st himself: 1 Bourges 1290 p - 1 Montluçon 507 p - 1 Lorris 1721 p - 1 Rethel 1292 p. (2 NPO Bourges 8278 p - 4 NPO Montluçon 1310 p -5 NPO Lorris 5537 p - 11 NPO Limoges 1326 p - Lorris 17 NPO 5166 p) ...

The family of "Kleine Gerard" has a true winner's mentality because the "17-144" (bred from a brother of "Kleine Gerard") won: 1/1555 Sezanne - 13/8177 NPO Sezanne - 2/521 La Souteraine (together with loft mate) 2/1094 NPO La Souteraine (together with loft mate) - 4/470 La Souteraine - 6/1,240 NPO La Souteraine - 13/6,033 Euregio Gien - 25/16,471 NPO Lorris - 37/1,884 NPO Montluçon - 108 / 3,555 NPO Argenton - 138 / 4,632 NPO Sens - 263 / 27,656 nat. SOME TIPS TO BRING ABOUT A GOOD CONDITION
Every year, this loft starts with a racing team of up to 29 widowers (old birds and yearlings alike). They specialize in the 1-day long distance races that are organized every two weeks in the Dutch province of Limburg. For the sake of clarity ... at Hendriks' they play the pure widowhood card with cocks.
How to prepare?
During the month of March, the pigeons are fed Hexenbier practically every day, to make sure the pigeons get "nice", and have a good blood flow in order to get white eye rims and nose caps. It provides them with the necessary basic condition. It is easy to see that this makes them eager to start training. The pigeons are housed in clean and dust-free pens. Better to take part in the races with fewer pigeons than with a lot pigeons if they lack the necessary attention and care. "Invest your time in a small group of quality pigeons, and you get top results", Florian knows. Every day the pigeons are given freedom at set times. Both in the morning and in the evening. ... In extremely hot weather, such as last season, they only train in the morning.
They have very good experience with Atemfrei: they add it over the feed the first days after the flight, the pigeons are eager to take it and the positive effect is visible on the eye rims.
Rozitol (nose drops) are administered every two weeks. Florian drips them in the noses of all the cocks, leaves them for about 10 minutes and finally takes them all in hand again and squeezes the noses. This makes it easier to loosen the mucus.
Rest - results in more top prizes - That is why they only play every two weeks. This is especially important with cocks. They also attach great importance to the weekly bath, with the addition of bath salts. This also has a relaxing effect and ensures a good recovery.
Extra training for moral: Between two 1-day long distance flights, the cocks are sometimes released at a short distance (40 km). This additional training between the two flights keeps the racing team's moral up. When they return from this short training flight, the hen is always positioned halfway the box.
Recovery: always make sure that the pigeons have recovered well. The "morning manure" is one of the indicators for a good recovery. Light food and a wide variety of grit are extremely important. If the pigeon fancier is met by flying downy feathers when entering the pen, he can rest assured. They play every two weeks, so the support schedule is a little more comprehensive. Coming home, the pigeons are given Mumm (dextrose and vitamin C) for two days after which they are given Rotasol over the feed for two to three days. So they choose to prepare the pigeons slowly but well towards the next flight.
A good inoculation schedule is important: youngsters are inoculated against Paramyxo in combination with Herpes upon weaning. If the entire group is together, they are inoculated against paramyxo pox (combination). That is followed by paratyphus inoculation (with dead inoculum) mid-May.
By the end of September, all breeding pigeons are inoculated against Paramyxo herpes. This helps them enter autumn clean and when they get back together, they should be disease-free so as not to pass anything to the youngsters. Early November, all the pigeons are vaccinated against paratyphoid again. During the moulting period, the pigeons are also regularly administered Taubengold to support a perfect moulting.
