Kris and Lieselotte De Bisschop from Essene continue to work on their top career year after year

15 Jan 2023

For the first time we visit a colony that has been an integral part of the championships since 2016, but if you play well, the titles will follow automatically. Kris De Bisschop practices the pigeon sport with his wife Ann, daughter Lieselotte and father Marc. The division of tasks is as follows: Kris and Ann take care of the daily care. Lieselotte helps during the holidays and weekends. The training as well as the administration are in the hands of Marc, Kris' dad. Practicing top sport with a job/study is quite a challenge, that's why they do it together. In this way they try to keep their pigeons in top condition in order to achieve good performances.

Conscious choice in their system

They race with a nice group of youngsters where the best young cocks are sent to the breeding loft while the young hens are allowed to continue their career as yearlings. As a 2-year old it ends for them anyway and the best pigeons go to the breeding loft. The national ace pigeons achieved in recent years are almost all in the breeding loft and most of them are doing well. Not all good racers are super breeders, that is the case in the pigeon sport, but if you breed from a good can you have a better chance.

After the season the pigeons are moved to the breeding loft. They can rest there for a year before starting their breeding career. This is a conscious choice that they do not deviate from.

If we look at the breeding loft, stock father "Robbeke" is a fixed value in many top pigeons. He won a 28th National Limoges against 16,893 pigeons and came from Martin De Roover ( strain Lambrechts – Lismont x Louis Van Den Eynde x Roger Ponnet ). We bought him at the total sale and have been very successful with this against various pigeons. The luck to find such a pigeon is of course a victory in building up a colony.

A quality breeding hen they bought was Steffi from Wilfried Van De Maele. She is the mother of two nest brothers "Den Hubert" and "Aidi 1". These 2 national ace pigeons also pass on their good breeding genes.

We also have contact with Team Noël – Willockx and several toppers in the breeding loft come from them.

System

The youngsters are darkened from mid-March to early June. The sexes are separated after they have flown 2x Noyon. When training, we choose a good training school so that they do not have to fly Quievrain (too large mass for too small a distance), so they do 1-5-10-20km several times and then another 5 to 10x to 35km. If they've endured this, Noyon shouldn't be a problem. During the season, extra flights are rarely driven, only if the flight has gone badly do we drive up to 35km on Wednesday to give the pigeons confidence again.

In terms of training, our pigeons don't fly too crazy at home. This is still good for the season (1h – 1h30 for the hens and an hour for the youngsters), but in the season we are happy if they complete half an hour. When there is enough light in the morning and it is warm enough, the yearling hens train around 7 am. This to ease the work in the afternoon. After feeding in the evening, they can rest in the resting pen. The hens fly every week, otherwise they will become eager to mate and you can no longer control them.

We keep it simple for motivation, we do nothing for basketing. The pigeons are smart enough and are even smarter than us. We basket the pigeons and when they return home the yearling hens stay together for 2 to 4 hours, as the season progresses this is until evening.

The youngsters come home and are allowed to stay together longer, usually it is early evening or the day after in the morning before they are separated.

Coaching

At the De Bisschop house, mixtures and by-products from Aidi are used. In the season this flight mix is 1 – 2 or 3 and occasionally Girl Power depending on the upcoming flight.

The youngsters always get breeding, even when they change small feathers we keep this up. When the time comes for them to train and it doesn't go the way we want, we use Vliegmix 1 and they automatically take to the air.

In the field of medical guidance, we prefer to go for a checkup once more than to cure blindly. Our regular man for this is Frederik Oosterlinck. The racing pigeons are given a yellow drop in their beak if necessary and were treated once against the respiratory tract last season. They vaccinate all their pigeons against paramyxo and the youngsters against smallpox. In the autumn, a check is carried out for paratyphus, with a negative result they immediately vaccinate, with a positive result they cure their pigeons before vaccination.

The lofts are always thoroughly cleaned and disinfected in the autumn to be ready for the new season.

The De Bisschop family has a colony to keep an eye on. We would like to congratulate them on their achievements from the entire HERBOTS TEAM.
