Provincial championships KBDB 2013
HERBOTS BROTHERS 1st Olympiad Bird Nitra old birds
Halle- Booienhoven a part of the city Zoutleeuw… the spot were three provinces namely Liege, Flemish-Brabant and Limburg touch each other…has always been a place where pigeon sport has been practiced on a very high level! Only the people who has been living for a long time on planet Mars doesn’t know the name of the “ primus inter pares “ of that area!
The pigeon sport career of the Herbots brothers has been one of many ace bird tittles, national victories, Olympiad titles … several classifications in the national championships KBDB…they won the national competition “Gouden Duif” (Golden Pigeon of Belgium)…and also the season 2012 may be classified as a very special one.
” Els “ … born in September 2010… became 3rd National Ace bird middle distance K.B.D.B. 2012, 1st Olympiad bird Nitra category H 2013… and 1st Ace bird middle distance K.B.D.B. Brabant 2012. Many more of the Herbots racers were in the Olympiad selection of 2013 ! Also first provincial champion middle distance K.B.D.B. Brabant 2012… 1st Ace bird middle distance K.B.D.B. Brabant 2012… and 5th National Champion middle distance K.B.D.B. are one the highlights on the result list 2012 of Herbots Brothers.
The combination Jo and Raf Herbots… and we mention in one breath Jo, Miet, Raf ,Filip, Jacqueline, Cois and Kristof… stand for all the successes of the last years and of course they all feel very happy with these super results !
Also a great thanks to Kristof Daniels (35)… the former loft manager of Jos Herbots… who joined the team. He is a loft manager who has the feeling for pigeon sport …the future looks great with such a loft manager !
Base of the colony
It was 1955 when Jos and Filip Herbots, started with the pigeons… they were only 12 and 14 years old… but in that time they were already so fanatic which is typical for great champions. The whole family Herbots raced pigeons… and everybody did what he could do to create a good base for their colony. Of course this happened on a road were success and disappointment is close to each other.
A great blood line in the Herbots colony are the Stoces-pigeons. They didn’t bought 1…not 10 but 124 Stoces birds ! Four years later only 21 pigeons survived the selection … but these survivors had a large share in the Herbots success.
But the success story goes on…In 1990 they bought “ De As “ by the brothers Clerinx from Nieuwerkerken…a very good pigeon and many pigeon fanciers did very well with this breeding line. In 1991, another stunt was made…they bought the whole breeding loft of the great master Karel Schellens. The top breeder became “Nationaal 1 “, many descendants of this top breeder became ace birds. The success of the 90s was without any doubt the result of the cross between “Nationaal 1 “ x “Bourgespaar Grondelaars “!
And then Filip invested in the fastest pigeons of the world… de Soontjes pigeons. The first Soontjes birds came in 1988 to Halle-Booienhoven… followed by a lot of others in the following years. The top breeder was without any doubt the “155 “. He has been bred by Jos Soontjes in combination with a Herbots hen ( Grondelaars strain ).
And also the “Hero 19 “ , bought in 1991 by Romain Loozen was a bullet’s eye. He has won 19 x 1st prizes, 1st National Argenton… 4x 1st provincial… and 6 x in the top-38 on national level ! Crossed with the Clerinx pigeons it became a great success. “Hero 19” became the father of 1st World Champion middle distance Versele-Laga…great- grandfather 2nd national ace bird middle distance1998 and Olympiad bird Blackpool. The brother of “ Hero 19 “ became the father of the 1st National ace bird middle distance 1998 and Olympiad bird by Clement Robben.
Later on, another top bird, “ Brad Pitt” of Ludo Helsen… or the 1st Olympiad bird Allround Liévin (France) was bought. He became the father of “Champion BP”.
In 1999, they bought a whole round of youngsters, by Van Avondt and son (Haacht). One of these original Van Avondt birds “ Queen 2000 “ became 1st national Ace bird middle distance K.B.D.B. 2000 ! In 2002 they bought again 50 youngsters in Haacht… and “ Zorro “ ( again an original Van Avondt bird)… became 4th national Ace middle distance K.B.D.B.
In 2003 they purchased the “ Fenomenale “ of Camiel Nulens, from Koersel ! He came, together with a round of youngsters, to Halle-Booienhoven… and from this fresh input the “884/03” was born. The “884/03” became 3rd provincial ace bird Brabant 2004 and 1st provincial ace bird Brabant 2005 !
All these new purchases were selected very hard and those who survived the severe selection were crossed into the own colony
They started in 2012 with the system of total widowhood. In function of this new discipline, the old widowers loft has been totally rebuilt. Very important on this rebuild lofts is the automatically cleaning system of the nest boxes and the aviaries before the lofts. In total there are 4 lofts, each loft contains 16 nest boxes. The hens stay the whole year in the aviary, and they only come in for eating or when the cocks are outside training. The cocks come only during the winter period in the aviary. During the racing season, they stay the first three days of the week in the aviary and the rest of the week they stay in the loft.
Begin December… the race team is the first time coupled, two youngsters are bred… but they make sure that the hens will not lay eggs anymore. When the youngsters are weaned, the nest boxes are closed with wooden plates on which perches are installed. The cocks stay on the loft and must sit on the perches while the hens are moved to the aviary.
In March the race team is the second time coupled… cocks and hens come together for 5 day and during that time, they are tossed a lot.
Cocks and hens train two times a day, this for a full hour…although the hens train more than the cocks. The day before basketing, the race team is tossed on a distance of 30 km, and when they arrive home, they stay together for one hour. On basketing day, the cocks and the hens will not come together anymore. For extra motivation ,there are 3 hens on surplus in the team…and this works perfect.
Recuperation is very important for pigeons who are raced every week. The feeding scheme of the racing team, which is raced on total widowhood, is as follow: On arrival day, Saturday, they receive 100% “Koopman mixture “ ( fat + proteins ), in the drinker they get “Top-Fit” (electrolytes). On Sunday the race team receives 50% “Vandenabeele-mixture” + 50% “ Koopman-mixture “ enriched with Tarsin (proteins )and “Extra Form “. In the drinking water , and this only after a bad race (with bad weather conditions), some medication for respiratory is mixed… when the race ( good weather condition) was normal Bronchovit is given. On Monday and Tuesday 100% Vandenabeele – mixture is on the menu, again enriched with Tarsin + Sedochol on Monday and 4 oils + BMT on Tuesday. .. and both days , Bronchovit in the drinking water. On Wednesday there are 3 feeding times with 50% “Vandenabeele-mixture”+ 50% “ Koopman-mixture”…afterward 100% “Koopman-mixture “ and in the evening 100% “Koopman-mixture “ + 10% Cribbs with Zell-Oxygen+ Optimix mixed on the corn . In the morning and in the evening Aminovit is mixed in the drinking water. On Thursday, also three feeding times a day, with 100% “Koopman-mixture” enriched with Sanuzuella + Optimix + 1 spoon of hempseed. In the drinking water CMK is given… and when the weather is hot Top- Fit (electrolytes ). On Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, they get on a regular base “bio eye drops”.
This feeding scheme is for races on the great middle distance. The first weeks of the racing season the use of by-products will be very little. The art is to wait until they really need it.
The young birds are weaned when they are 25 days old, and then they get a Spartix and a Appertex. When the youngsters are 2 months old, the will be vaccinated against paramyxo… and 10 days later, they get antibiotics this during 10 days. They will be also vaccinated against paratyfus.
The youngsters are darked from 16h00 in the evening. When its dark outside, the darking system will be pulled up , so the young birds will wake up together with the morning sun. When you dark in this way, there will be less loses of the youngsters. The darkening happens from the first month after weaning till half of June.
Begin April, the first tosses for the young birds are programmed. The first toss is 7km away from the loft. When the weather is good, the tosses will go on and before they have their first race on club level, the youngsters will have had 10 training races. “The earlier you toss the young birds the better” that’s what they say in Halle-Booienhoven. During the racing season the young birds will be tossed twice a week, this on a distance of 40 till 50km. The main target of these tosses is to sharpen the orientation and to train the young birds to departure very fast. In the main season the youngsters have around 20 races on their program, this includes the national races for young birds. Every young bird goes every week to the races, in this way the youngsters will select themselves. Sometimes, from the 200 youngsters, only 80 remain.. or even less…but this is not the problem. He who performs well will be cherished at the Herbots place…but those who do not perform must move.
Filip tells: “ A good advice … the best young birds are most of the time the best year birds . I am more afraid of a “squeezed” yearling then of a young bird, that got into red. If a good year bird performs not good as an old bird than it is better to let him rest for one year… otherwise it might be that his widowers career is gone forever!”
At the end of the racing season, the race birds are cured for 5 till 7 days against trichomoniase…afterwards no medicines are administrated anymore this till the preparation of the breeding season, end of October.
The breeders get a cure of 8 till 10 days against paratyfus and after that they will be vaccinated with a “living vaccine”. During breeding time, again a trichomoniase cure of 5 days is planned. In January the race birds will be vaccinated against paramyxo and pocs… 3 weeks later a cure against parathyfus of 8 till 10 days is given, followed with an vaccination. During the racing season, every three weeks, the racers will be examined for the common diseases and in 2012 we gave 2 times a tablet against trichomoniose. We cured also 2 or 3 times, this always for 2 days, against respiratory infection, with a product of vet Raf Herbots. Before important races ( 2 or 3 times during season ), they will be cured with the product Paracoli ( antibiotic ).
As already mentioned the young birds get when they are weaned a Spartix and a Appertex, and they are also vaccinated against paramyxo and pocs. Three weeks later they will be vaccinated against the herpes virus. All these vaccinations will result in healthy pigeons, birds with more natural resistance. Four weeks after weaning, they are cured for 7 days against trichomoniases… 6 weeks after weaning, they also cured for 7 days against paratyfus followed by a vaccination. Further on in the racing season, the same will be done as with the old pigeons.
Filip Herbots : “ we live in a society, were everything tend to professionalism… so why not in pigeon sport ? In the morning, 5 people are busy for 2 hours with the pigeons. Do not forget that the last 10% of the success is the most difficult to obtain. I observe the pigeons…I try to see when the pigeons get tired…I watch very close the illness symptoms…judge the power, the vitality and expression of the racing team… search for deviant behavior, what betray the condition of some racers…look how the pigeons act on the loft… and look at the sky when they are training. As a fancier you must see when a pigeon is getting ill and not when it is already ill… looking out for a pigeon which is not feeling good on the loft, that is one of the most important things for me to do.
A fancier must make sure that a pigeon is feeling good on the loft. The widowers will never be locked up, because we think that you must let them be the boss or have a fight on the floor. It is public secret fact that a pigeon comes home for his territory. .. never forget this as a fancier !
Most of the fanciers, have too many pigeons. With our whole team, we spent every day 20 hours to 72 widowers, 72 hens and 200 youngsters. So a fancier, who can only spent 3 hours of his time to his pigeons, can maximum house 10 widowers, 5 hens and 3 youngsters. But nobody believes it !
A top pigeon fancier is an academic without a degree…at the same time he is a pedagogue…psychology on his loft. He can’t be a fool !
The racing season 2013
The increase the number of national races for old and young pigeons, is positive. When the races are not too difficult (1500 m), the team of the total widowhood and also the youngsters will be basketed for every national race. If it was a difficult race, the week after they will be basketed for 360 km and the week after that again for 550 km. Very important with the expansion of the racing program is the recovery. Let the recovery be as fast as it can be, by giving them proteins and electrolytes. You can compare this with the Tour of France . At this time, you cannot find many birds of 4 of 5 years old on the result list and with this racing program 2013, it will not get better. Most of the time, “youthful “champions will be sold, or will be sitting on the breeding loft. For example…the oldest pigeon on our loft is a pigeon from 2010.
