BART & NANCE VAN OECKEL - OUD-TURNHOUT
1st NATIONAL LIMOGES 10,565 YEARBIRDS
Oud-Turnhout: Hat off for the performance of the yearling hen of Bart & Nance Van Oeckel. Knowing that the first pigeons didn’t even make 1,175 m/m and clocking 1st prize national against 10,565 year birds on one of the longest distances (700km952m) … we can only speak about an amazing performance !
When you visit Bart & Nance you are immediately impressed with the marvellous loft which was built brand new in 2015. Not a loft that was just built like that, no…you can feel that there’s a strategy behind it. Thinking about the way of constructing it is something Bart surely kept awake during several nights. First of all, the loft needed to work perfectly with their system and secondly the loft acclimatization (oxygen – temperature – light) needed to be correct for 100%
Although Bart pretends not to be a real pigeon fancier at all, his list of honour says the opposite. If you know that Bart & Nance entered their first loft list in 2001 and now 16 years later can write 3 national victories and 14 provincial victories on their palmaris, we can put the Van Oeckel colony without a doubt in the range of the ‘top colonies’.
“ZWARTE DIAMANT” AND “F-16”
Bart and Nance have pigeons on their loft from several different fanciers but won’t give any names, afraid in forgetting some one. The base breeder of the Van Oeckel colony is without a doubt “Zwarte Diamant” (BE05-6054296). He is a direct Geerinckx pigeon (son of ‘Blauwe Ijzeren’ x ‘Dochter Goede Rode’). Fantastic children from “Zwarte Diamant” are amongst other: ‘F16’, ‘Magic Diamant’, ‘Miss Poznan’ and so on…
We like to give some attention to top pigeon “F-16”, according to Bart the new base breeder of their loft. The list of honour of the “F-16” is one to have tremendously respect for: 1st National La Souterraine 3,562d 620km (fastest of 20,124b) – 5th National Bourges 24,676b – 10th National La Souterraine 4,778b – 1st Ace bird Confidential Cup FCD Budapest 2012 – 2nd European Ace bird Cat. C 2011 – 4th Olympiad bird Belgium Cat. C Nitra 2012
CHAOS AS FORMULA OF SUCCESS
The season of 2017 was started off with a group of 190 racing pigeons, whereof 23 old pigeons and 160 yearlings. Before we talk about the system, you have to know a bit more about the loft construction. Both on the left as on the right side there are 3 lofts (1 for the old/year birds – two for the youngsters) of 8m. That 8m loft exists out of 3 departments, that is one department for the hens, one department for the cocks and in between one department named ‘the cuddling room’. This last one is a loft full of boxes and ‘dark corners’. The pigeons who reside on the left are being basketed for the races on Thursday and the pigeons on the right are being basketed for the long distance (basketing on Wednesday).
No winter breeding for the racing pigeons but they had to wait until the 20th of January before the hens and cocks could come together in the ‘cuddling room’. After 4 weeks the sexes were being split up. At that time about 40% were on eggs. They didn’t have a second breed in Spring.
Bart: “in a matter of motivation, the cocks and hens come together in the ‘cuddling room’. In other words; chaos. One week they do come together before basketing, the other week they don’t, sometimes for a short period, sometimes for a longer period. I think, variation brings on motivation. Also after a race there isn’t a fixed timing in how long they should stay together. Mostly they can stay together longer when they performed well and for a shorter time of period when they didn’t perform well.”
The feeding happens a lot by feeling. They make a mixture with the next mixtures: Galaxy Light, Galaxy Energy (Beyers), Super Diet and Breeding mixture (Van Robaeys). According to the race they have to do, the share of one or the other mixture is being increased or decreased.
In a matter of side products the products of the Herbovet range is at number 1. Products as Herbo Elite Pigeon, Herbo MMK, Herbosol and Herbo Recovery Plus have become indispensable. Vet Raf Herbots is being visited twice a year but a lot of calls are made in between to discuss the does and don’ts of the Van Oeckel colony.
The week before Limoges all pigeons stayed at home (with exception of 4 pigeons to gather the necessary points for the championships). Bart: ”As from end of March they went into the basket every week so a weekend of resting was more than welcome. During this obliged resting period we gave them daily a shot of beet juice in the drinking pot.”
ORIGINAL HERBOTS GEBROEDERS
Since 2016, we have an agreement with the Herbots family to exchange 50 youngsters from the 3rd round. As youngster, no results are expected but as a year bird and old bird they have to proof their class. And look…an original Herbots hen wins national Limoges and at the Herbots family an original Van Oeckel pigeon wins on the same race the 37th national. Again a well-meant big thank you to the Herbots family for the perfect cooperation!”
When taking the national Limoges winner by hand it stroke immediately that she dropped her first pin and at the day of the race her new pin was showing slightly. Apparently this wasn’t a ‘handicap’ to win this majestic victory.
Bart and Nance…congratulation from the entire Herbots team !
