TODAY ENDS AT 2 p.m. PIGEON BIDS AUCTION LEUTENEZ WITH 1st AND 3rd National ace KBDB ALL-ROUND 2017

It is only reserved for a few, being able to start up a few times again a pigeon strain with success. A select group of pigeon fanciers does succeed in doing this anyway, after building down a successful colony, getting back to the top in no time. One of them is Eddy Leutenez who raced before very successful in Gavere and Semmerzake and could take a.o. 6 x 1 National onto his account.

In the beginning of the years 2000 the health of Eddy was very bad and he was forced to stop racing pigeons totally. A huge setback for someone who has been busy with the pigeon sport this passionate. But they had to do what they had to do and the house in Semmerzake was being sold and a new house was built in Kruishoutem….without pigeons.

And then all of a sudden, there is his son Maarten that is feeling the pigeon germ doing its work in him. A god’s gift for Eddy? We don’t know yet, but they did decide to keep pigeons again. Keeping pigeons at the Leutenez family means, winning and nothing less. And they started off again…first relatively small on top of the garage to expand later again with garden lofts.

The art of building a pigeon strain

A re-start, easily said, not that easy realized. It has been shown several times by now that it isn’t just buying new pigeons. There is something else necessary like real knowledge to figure it all out. And Eddy can do that and in the meanwhile also Maarten knows how to do this.

Sometimes there is some luck involved but especially a nose for talent needed. In Ooike there was a small strong hen that won a very hard provincial Tours with head wind. Eddy liked to see this little lady and went on a visit to her owner José Denoyette. He bought this bunch of muscles and ‘Bolleken’ became the property of Eddy and Maarten. A real hit in the rose as she is a part of the base of the current colony. Afterwards, her parents also moved to the loft in Kruishoutem.

Eddy was thinking about his old strain with nostalgia and there were some of his pigeons and his blood strains to be found back again at other pigeon fanciers. Amongst other at his old known friend, Marc De Cock (Race Pigeon Farm Belgium).  From Marc we know that he also has a nose for talented pigeons and nothing or nobody keeps him from getting these onto his loft. The last few seasons, also the colony of Marc has been performing well and is to be found more than once at the national top.

Eddy got back his own strain from ‘Milan’ (once 1st provincial Blois and 6th national La Soutteraine) and also brought back a hen from the De Rauw-Sablon and a young ‘Eagle Eye’ (strain Eric Limbourg).  Piece by piece real classful pigeons who were able to strengthen the new base strain. And…it did work out. The crossing in of these pigeons took care really fast for head prizes from the short distance to the long distance.

Where is it that Eddy and Maarten look at when they are looking for a reinforcement? They have to stand out of the pack, they have to give a good first impression, have a lot of muscles and a very soft feathers and especially appearance.

And these pigeons were selected out at Benny Steveninck (who also got successes with the pigeons from Eddy, in the pedigree of ‘Chipo’ we find the pigeons from Eddy), Eric Limbourg (the ‘pigeon cat’ with 7 lives) and Ulrich Lemmens.

In short we can split up the breeding strain in 3 breeding lines :

  • The strain of  ‘Het Bolleken’ who is to be found in the bigger part of the pigeons. They all are off spring of the breeding couple ‘José’ x ‘Rita’ and their miracle daughter ‘Het Bolleken’. In the meantime a lot of children, grandchildren of the 3 mentioned pigeons are to be found on the breeding loft

  • The strain “Eagle Eye” ( Eric Limbourg) and De Rauw- Sablon. All of these pigeons were bought at Marc De Cock. The top breeding hen ‘Limo Eagle Eye’ and ‘Federer’ are exponents from them.
  • The strain ‘Milan’ from their own old strain of the ‘Supercrack’. This own strain was also bought back at Marc De Cock and the ‘Grote Milan’ and ‘Siska’ are offspring of them with strong results.

From 2010 on straight to the top

The real re-start in Kruishoutem started from season 2010. Maarten took a bit more time for the caring, a few extra lofts were being built and the breeding train was on the rails….and it went straight forward very fast.

From the first season on, they won amazingly easy head prizes and the foundation was being laid for the top results of the coming seasons. It even gave the words to Eddy ‘Maarten is even more eager than I am’, which was and still is a great motivation for both of them.

A full overview of the results of the past seasons would be to extended but from the season 2015-2016 (the season of 2017 will be discussed later on) we can show you the underneath results:

The ultimate satisfaction and proof when others succeed with your pigeon strain

Getting to the top is the drive of every motivated sportsman, but there’s another satisfaction factor that even has more proof namely that other pigeon fanciers race amazingly well with your pigeons or off spring of them. And Eddy and Maarten have gathered a nice list of references on their own by now:

Season 2017 is being crowned with the 1st and 3rd ace bird All Round KBDB – ‘Trapke’ and ‘Alaphilippe’ are on stage

Since this season there’s been a new type of ace pigeon born at the KBDB namely the All Round pigeon of the season. The definition of this ‘new ace bird’ competition is as follows:

All round is going to be won with the same pigeon over 5 races, classified per 10 and in choice of old or year bird either

  • 1 race extreme long distance
  • 2 races long distances
  • 2 races greater middle distance

These pigeons are the pentathletes of the pigeon sport, the ‘Thiams’ of this world. Polyvalent and athletic on all distances, real musclemen.

At the beginning of the season there was some commotion around this classification, but this is always the case when something new passes by.

But the result is amazing. There is only one pigeon that got 5 prizes namely the year bird (BE16-4157845)’ Trapke’. From the 42 classified pigeons there is only one with 5 prizes and 41 with 4 prizes.

And if this isn’t enough, also top pigeon ‘Alaphilippe’ (BE16-4157919) is on stage.  This powerful pigeon is also the 8th national ace bird long distance 2017.

This new ranking is bulging with top lofts who were able to classify a pigeon. A confirmation of the value of the pigeon strain from Eddy and Maarten.

The palmaris of ‘Alaphilippe’, enjoy it :

A five star racing team

The quality is average very high at Leutenez. They don’t own an extended colony (20 to 25 breeding couples, 80 youngsters and about 32 racing pigeons with 20 widow cocks and 12 hens). The long distance program was raced with only 16 racing pigeons !! Having these kind of results from short distance to the extreme long distance asks for quality and class. Also at this loft they suffered their part of losses including losing several top racing pigeons.

Despite these restrictions they own a true five start racing team that, as the results show, can compete with the best of the best. A few examples :

‘Cavendish’ (BE12-4215080)

Succeeded well in the season of 2017 that is being coloured with a few ace pigeons, but even more succeeded as base breeders. Eddy and Maarten proved in a matter of time having a very strong breeding and racing team with noble blood and able to race weekly with a small colony to the national top !

Congratulations from the Herbots team!
